Katiadi: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday emphasized the urgent need for public awareness and coordinated efforts to protect rivers, canals, haors, beels, and other water bodies from pollution, asserting that safeguarding the environment is crucial for preserving the country’s fisheries resources.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister made these remarks during the inauguration of National Fisheries Fortnight-2026 at the George Institute Mini Stadium in Achmita union of Katiadi upazila. The fortnight, running from August 16 to 30, is themed ‘A self-sufficient country through silver fish, Bangladesh first.’ Rahman stressed that the degradation of water bodies by waste such as plastic bottles and tissue paper poses a significant threat to fisheries, which are vital for meeting the nation’s nutritional needs and providing employment.
Highlighting the link between environmental protection and fisheries, Rahman urged collective efforts to conserve aquatic resources and promote sustainable fish farming practices. He called for the restoration and productive use of ponds, haors, beels, and other water bodies to boost fish production, create jobs, and elevate the incomes of young people and marginalized communities.
During the event, the Prime Minister awarded the National Fisheries Medal to 14 individuals and organizations for their contributions to the sector. He also announced plans to renovate unused water bodies and allocate them to local youth for fish farming, aiming to increase employment and revenue.
Rahman pointed out the significant foreign exchange earnings from fish exports, which amounted to over Tk 6,000 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year, and urged entrepreneurs to explore new markets. Citing an FAO report, he noted Bangladesh’s global ranking in aquatic animal production and inland fish capture, emphasizing the potential for further growth.
The government has initiated several projects, including forming shrimp farming clusters in Khulna and developing a master plan for shrimp farming in Cox’s Bazar. The focus on hilsa conservation, a national and economic asset, was also highlighted, given its substantial contribution to fish production and GDP.
Rahman underscored the government’s commitment to the fisheries sector, which supports around 2 crore people, including 14 lakh women. Initiatives such as the Farmers’ Card programme and VGF support during fishing bans are part of efforts to enhance fishermen’s livelihoods.
The Prime Minister announced a Tk 500 crore startup fund to encourage technology-driven employment and innovation, urging young entrepreneurs to seize these opportunities. The National Fisheries Fortnight will feature various activities to promote safe fish production and raise awareness about fisheries’ nutritional value.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid, along with other dignitaries, attended the event. Earlier, Rahman participated in fish fry releases, hatchery visits, and community engagements, with plans to inaugurate additional programs later in the day.
